TRUE FRIENDSHIP

There is an aching in every heart for the community. God did not design us to go through this life alone. We are called to help each other, encourage one another, and live life together for His glory.

The Lord has laid on my heart eight characteristics of a godly friend that I hope to grow in and which I hope might encourage you.

First, a godly friend is present. We should prioritize our relationships and be ever-present. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times.” All times includes not only good times but also difficult times.

Second, a godly friend is intentional. We should be intentional about reaching out and connecting. We need to show love to those whom God has placed in our lives at this present time. We never know what God might do with a simple kind word or gesture.

Third, a godly friend is supportive. We should cheer on our friends and build them up with love and kindness. We should strive to bear one another’s burdens with gentleness.

Fourth, a godly friend is humble. God calls us to value others above ourselves and be a servant. Love does not look down on others but believes the best about them.

Fifth, a godly friend forgives. Though it’s difficult, God calls us to overlook wrongs and be quick to forgive, not holding on to offenses.

Sixth, a godly friend is compassionate. Sometimes, simply listening to the hurting is the best way to display genuine love and care. We should use Scripture and prayer to give hope and comfort to discouraged friends.

Seventh, a godly friend is Christlike. As believers, we must shine bright and point others to Christ through our actions. It is crucial that we center our relationships around faith in the Lord. Friendships built upon the foundation of God’s Word are sure to endure through the storms of life.

Eighth, a godly friend loves above all else. A practical way we can love is to put others first. We must follow Christ’s example by loving one another sacrificially.

Friendship is a gift to be value and cherished. We are better together, and as iron sharpens iron, so one sharpens another. Be a faithful friend as you journey together in becoming more like Christ.

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Colossians 3:12-14
